Atoning Lesson from the Garden

So, as you have probably figured out, I do my best thinking when working in my yard/garden. I spent a VERY LONG time working in my yard the other day. I thought a lot about the line between defending God and myself, and how best to deal with such situations.

There lives in our neighborhood a child who sometimes chooses to be less kind than the average little girl. Taite often catches the brunt of this child's unkind words and actions. I've watched as Taite has sat back dumbfounded when the little girl has said, "Go away, Taite. You're not with us." Taite just doesn't get it. I see Taite trying to work through it in her mind just sure that she misheard the other girl because NO ONE talks that way!

It's been four years now of Taite being uneasy around this little girl. Taite is not the only one to suffer little hurts caused by this child. Taite has often come home from church telling me of instances when this little girl has caused other children to cry. But I think we've found a solution! I remembered hearing a story of President Spencer W. Kimball asking an unknown man to watch his words.

"In the hospital one day I was wheeled out of the operating room by an attendant who stumbled, and there issued from his angry lips vicious cursing with a combination of the names of the Savior. Even half-conscious, I recoiled and implored: 'Please! Please! That is my Lord whose names you revile.'"

I also thought of the story Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin told in General Conference this past April.

"I remember when I was young, there was an older boy who was physically and mentally disabled. He had a speech impediment and walked with difficulty. The boys used to make fun of him. They teased and taunted him until sometimes he would cry.
I can still hear his voice: 'You’re not kind to me,' he said. And still they would ridicule him, push him, and make jokes about him. One day I could bear it no longer. Although I was only seven years old, the Lord gave me the courage to stand up to my friends. 'Don’t touch him,” I said to them. “Stop teasing him. Be kind. He is a child of God!'"

I also remember reading of the Savior defending a harlot in the streets just before she was stoned to death. In John 8:6-7 we read the Savior's reaction,

"But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger awrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her."

I have realized that truth is truth no matter what. No matter where it is stated. No matter by whom. Truth must be declared, and untruth must be dispelled. However, as in each aforementioned example it can be done in kind ways. I love that President Kimball started his with not once, but twice imploring, "Please." I like that Elder Wirthlin didn't retaliate with rude comments, insults, or unkind accusations. He merely reminded the other boys of the infinite worth of each of us. And, finally, with our Master I love the many lessons we learn from his experience. He pauses before speaking, and thus teaches us to think before reacting. He writes in the sand of the street, and thus teaches us that just like the words he is writing in the dust, all sins can disappear in the wind. He reminds the accusers that all men on Earth are incapabale of perfection, but as He does with the harlot, He can and will save us.

After thinking things over for a long time I sat down with Taite to discus how best to deal with the little girl in our neighborhood. I told her that we will all experience unkind things in our life, and we will intentionally and/or unintentionally cause pain to others. This is inevitable, and a part of Heavenly Father's plan for us. I reminded her that Jesus Christ was perfect, yet some very mean people chose to kill him. The Savior didn't do one single thing wrong, but was killed just the same. The big part of that is that He chose to forgive them. WOW!
In 3 Nephi 27:27 we read the Savior's words, "Therefore, what manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am." I continued talking with Taite, and asked her what that means to her. We decided together that if we want to become like Christ we must try to live like Him, and even endure as He endured. I like the way Uncle Keith explained this in General Conference, October 2006.

"As we are called upon to endure suffering, sometimes inflicted upon us intentionally or negligently, we are put in a unique position—if we choose, we may be allowed to have new awareness of the suffering of the Son of God. While Alma tells us that Christ suffered all that any of us will ever have to suffer that He might know how to succor us, the reverse may also be true: that our suffering may allow us insight into the depth and magnitude of His atoning sacrifice."

Does this mean we allow others to bully and taunt us and/or anyone else around us? I don't think so. This is just my opinion, but I believe we are to stand for truth and righteousness no matter what.

Mosiah 18:9, "Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life—"

I think, if done with pure hearts and honest intentions we can kindly remind people of the divine heritage of each of us. I told Taite, "By simply putting your finger to your lips, and whispering, 'Shhhhh...' to the little girl whenever she tries to say something negative to anyone you will be reminding her and everyone else that we are all children of God. It will most likely put an end to any hurtful words. And nothing else need be said that may cause further pain."

The following Sunday Taite put our experiement to the test, and wouldn't you know... it worked perfectly!

Jesus the Christ

These are just a few of my favorite quotes and pictures of Jesus Christ.

"Any criticism that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints does not hold the contemporary Christian view of God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost is not a comment about our commitment to Christ but rather a recognition (accurate, I might add) that our view of the Godhead breaks with post New Testament Christian history and returns to the doctrine taught by Jesus Himself." ~Jeffrey R. Holland~

"What shall we do with Jesus who is called Christ? Learn of him. Search the scriptures for they are they which testify of him. Ponder the miracle of his life and mission. Try a little more diligently to follow his example and observe his teachings." ~Gordon B. Hinckley~

"We long to be close to the Lord, for we know that He loves each of us and desires to encircle us 'eternally in the arms of his love' (2 Nephi 1:15). His touch can heal ailments spiritual, emotional, or physical. He is our Advocate, Exemplar, Good Shepherd, and Redeemer. Where else would we look, where else would we reach, where else would we come but to Jesus Christ, 'the author and finisher of our faith?' (Hebrews 12:2). "He pronounced: 'Yea, verily . . . , if ye will come unto me ye shall have eternal life. Behold, mine arm of mercy is extended towards you, and whosoever will come, him will I receive' (3 Nephi 9:14). His promise invites us not only to reach towards Him but also to take the all-important next step: to come unto Him."
~Anne C. Pingree~

"I testify that Jesus Christ is the literal, living Son of our literal, living God." ~Jeffrey R. Holland~

"I love the gospel of Jesus Christ, for it defines the way we can partake of the fruits of the gospel, experience the “exceedingly great joy” (1 Nephi 8:12) that only it can bring, and endure to the end through all of the challenges of mortal life."
~L. Tom Perry~

"And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins." 2 Nephi 25:26

As one of His Apostles, authorized to bear witness of Him, I solemnly testify that I know that the Savior lives, that He is a resurrected, glorified personage of perfect love. I witness that He gave His life that we might live with Him eternally. He is our hope, our Mediator, our Redeemer." ~Richard G. Scott~

"We are called upon to endure suffering, sometimes inflicted upon us intentionally or negligently, we are put in a unique position—if we choose, we may be allowed to have new awareness of the suffering of the Son of God. While Alma tells us that Christ suffered all that any of us will ever have to suffer that He might know how to succor us,the reverse may also be true: that our suffering may allow us insight into the depth and magnitude of His atoning sacrifice." ~Keith R. Edwards~

"I bear witness of the Lord Jesus Christ. He lives. He is our Redeemer and is our Savior. He presides over this Church. He is no stranger to His servants here, and as we move into the future with quiet confidence, His spirit will be with us."
~Boyd K. Packer~

"I marvel at His matchless power to heal. I testify of Jesus Christ as the Master Healer."

"Jesus suffered deeply because He loves us deeply! He wants us to repent and be converted so that He can fully heal us. 'When sore trials come upon us' it's time to deepen our faith in God, to work hard, and to serve others. Then He will heal our broken hearts. He will bestow upon us personal peace and comfort. Those great gifts will not be destroyed, even by death."
~Russell M. Nelson~

"I testify of God's love and the Savior's power to calm the storm. Always remember in that biblical story that He was out there on the water also. . . . Only one who has fought against those ominous waves is justified in telling us--as well as the sea--to 'be still' [Mark 4:39]. Only one who has taken the full brunt of such adversity could ever be justified in telling us in such times to 'be of good cheer' [John 16:33]." ~Jeffrey R. Holland~

"When we have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we must have trust in him. We must trust him enough that we are content to accept his will, knowing that he knows what is best for us. . . . When we try to develop faith in the Lord Jesus Christ rather than merely cultivating faith as an abstract principle of power, we understand the meaning of the Savior'swords: 'If ye will have faith in me ye shall have power to do whatsoever thing is expedient in me.'" ~Dallin H. Oaks~

"I express special gratitude to the Lord Jesus Christ. I am thankful for His loving-kindness and for His open invitation to come unto Him." ~Russell M. Nelson~

"[Jesus Christ] is a teacher of truth--but He is more than a teacher. He is the Exemplar of the perfect life--but He is more than an exemplar. He is the Great Physician--but He is more than a physician. He is the literal Savior of the world. . . . I testify to you that He lives and that through Him, we too shall live."
~Thomas S. Monson~

“This is the Lord's promise to me and to you, 'Peace I give unto you,' the Lord promises, 'not as the world giveth, give I unto you' (John 14:27). Peace. Strength. It is what we long for and what is possible. We only need to turn toward His reaching arms." ~Kathleen H. Hughes~

"Our Father in Heaven wants each of us to enjoy peace and happiness in mortal life. Our Master, Jesus Christ, and His prophets have taught how to have that peace and happiness, even in a world that is ever more challenging, with increasing conflict and an intense concentration of alluring temptations."
~Richard G. Scott~

"It has been fully established beyond all controversy . . . that the object of Christ's mission to the earth was to offer himself as a sacrifice to redeem mankind from eternal death, and that it was perfectly in accordance with the will of the Father that such a sacrifice should be made. He acted strictly in obedience to his Father's will in all things from the beginning, and drank of the bitter cup given him. Herein is brought to light, glory, honour, immortality, and eternal life, with that charity which is greater than faith or hope, for the Lamb of God has thereby performed that for man which [man] could not accomplish for himself." ~Wilford Woodruff~

"The Lord has mandated that this people get all the education they can. He has been very clear about this. . . . "
~Gordon B. Hinckley~

"On one occasion the ruler of the synagogue came to Jesus pleading for help for his dying daughter. While he yet spoke to the Master, those of the ruler's house came and said: 'Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?' " 'As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe' (Mark 5:35-36). "I commend those tremendous words to you. Be not afraid, only believe." ~Gordon B. Hinckley~

"There are times when you are fearful, when the stress and busyness of life seem to overwhelm you, when you feel adrift from the Spirit. Perhaps you even feel as though you have been abandoned. When I encounter those feelings, the best antidote is my memory of the moments when Christ's peace has come to strengthen me. . . . I invite you to remember with me what it is to feel the Lord's love in your life and to feel encircled in His arms." ~Kathleen H. Hughes~

"We, [the Lord's] daughters, need to know that He loves us. We need to know that He sees the good in us. Feeling His love encourages us to press forward, reassures us that we are His, and confirms to us that He cherishes us even when we stumble and experience temporary setbacks. . . "Our Heavenly Father loved us before we came to this earth. I know that He loves us, sisters, as does His Son, Jesus Christ. That love will never change--it is constant. You can rely on it. ~Bonnie D. Parkin~

"He is our Lord, our Redeemer, the Messiah, the King of Zion, the Rock of Heaven. He ransomed us with His blood."
~Boyd K. Packer~

"If you want to be near Him, to feel His peace, you can do it best in His service. He is the one who said: 'Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.' 'Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.' 'For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.'” ~Henry B. Eyring~

"Our Redeemer gave His life as a vicarious sacrifice for all men, and in so doing became our Savior." ~Gordon B. Hinckley~

"Your life is carefully watched over, as was mine. The Lord knows both what He will need you to do and what you will need to know. He is kind and He is all-knowing. So you can with confidence expect that He has prepared opportunities for you to learn in preparation for the service you will give." ~Henry B. Eyring~

"I'm impressed with the spirit and energy of so many of our members. Hearts are being touched and lives are being blessed. The work is moving forward in dynamic ways. . . . "The Lord in His infinite wisdom has designed His Church to operate with a lay ministry. That means we have been charged to watch over one another and to serve one another. We are to love one another as our Father in Heaven and the Lord Jesus Christ love us." ~M. Russell Ballard~

"The Divine Shepherd has a message of hope, strength, and deliverance for all. If there were no night, we would not appreciate the day, nor could we see the stars and the vastness of the heavens. We must partake of the bitter with the sweet. There is a divine purpose in the adversities we encounter every day. They prepare, they purge, they purify, and thus they bless." ~James E. Faust~

"Each of us will have our own Fridays--those days when the universe itself seems shattered and the shards of our world lie littered about us in pieces. We all will experience those broken times when it seems we can never be put together again. We will all have our Fridays. But I testify to you in the name of the One who conquered death--Sunday will come. In the darkness of our sorrow, Sunday will come. No matter our desperation, no matter our grief, Sunday will come. In this life or in the next, Sunday will come. I testify to you that the Resurrection is not a fable. We have the personal testimonies of those who saw Him. Thousands in the Old and New Worlds witnessed the risen Savior. They felt the wounds in His hands, feet, and side. They shed tears of unrestrained joy as they embraced Him." ~Joseph B. Wirthlin~

Princess Lyndee

You'll see at the bottom of my blog a "Princess Test." I was really excited to find this, thanks to Becky Pili. When Quincy's family, Naomi & Christy, and my family went to California we all did the Disney Character Test at California Adventure. Quincy came up to me all smiling and happy. He had that look of humble pride. You know, when something really sweet has happened. Something you suspected, and even expected, but when it actually takes place it totally hits you right in the heart. He said, "Naomi got Cinderella." Quincy and Naomi really like each other. They really like me, too, but they really like each other, and they understand one another without having to ever question, "From which planet do you come? I know we don't have the same parents." They often question their biological connection to me. I'm 100% okay with this. At any rate, I immediately & HONESTLY responded to Quincy's remark regarding Naomi being Cinderella with, "So did I!" I've never seen Quincy look so shocked! It took a second for Quincy to return to Earth, but once he did he asked, "How many times did you have to take the test, and how many lies did you tell?" I think he was expecting my character to be something more along the lines of...

But come now, if I'm going to be a witch I'm certainly not going to go with a Disney witch. I'm going to go all the way with Elphaba. After all, green is my favorite color.

Baby Ryder

My good friend, Holly Wattles, just became a Grandma! Holly has the cutest family ever! I trained Holly and her daughter, Ashley, when I was in Vegas. I also tutored another of Holly's daughters, Courtney. Holly has 3 other children: Nick, Megan, and Carlie. I miss them all very much, but luckily they will all be moving to Provo very soon! At any rate, Ashley and her husband, Brad, have just welcomed their first baby to their home! I received the following email and picture yesterday...

He was 5 1/2 weeks early. He weighed 5lbs 2oz. He's 18" long. He has black hair. He's PERFECT IN EVERY WAY! He could have stayed in the oven a little longer but he's doing great. They will probably keep him about a week. His lungs need to finish developing and he needs to start eating. But he's on track for his age. Mom and dad are doing great also! As for me... This gramma thing is AMAZING!!!!! Ashley was in Arizona for a baby shower Brads' family was giving her. I was supposed to fly down at 10:00 this morning from Utah. I got a call around 4:30am (AZ time) from Brad that they were at the hospital. I headed down there as soon as I could about 2 1/2 hours later. They called me just as we were getting up in the air to say he was born at 6:33am (I believe). What an exciting day! He's such a little miracle! Love, Gramma Holly

I HATE CATS!!!

I hate cats! I really do. For a few minutes~ when I very first moved here~ I thought I liked them, but I was wrong. We tried adopting a cat, which I named, "Elvis." It didn't work out. He was only around for two days. I don't like cats. I HATE THEM! (Sorry, Michelle, no offense.) Our neighbors, bless their hearts, (I like to say, "bless their hearts" because then I can say whatever else I want, but it won't sound mean.) At any rate, our neighbors have 2 adult, female cats that have both recently littered, literally littered. Our neighborhood is a mess! Completely littered with millions of unwanted cats! The neighbors now have over 20 cats! These cats seem attracted to my house, and won't leave us alone! YUCK!!! I went to get in my car, and there were 8 cats in my garage! Every single time we open our garage there are cats inside, and more waiting outside just ready to pounce on in and join all their naughty, little, feline siblings and cousins. I'm losing my mind! Besides all that they are using my backyard as a litter box! I'm sick! My entire neighborhood smells like cat! I'm afraid I'm going to have to notify the authorities!

Ballantyne Reunion 2008

I hosted the 2008 Ballantyne Family Reunion. My mom's maiden name is Ballantyne, and the reunion was held for her, and her brother & sister. We had a pretty good attendence. Aunt Mary and Yvonne's family represented the Berry's. My parents, Jeff's family, as well as my own were here from Edwardsville. Uncle Jack didn't join us, but Auntie Ann and all of their children's families were here. It was really fun! Thursday night Aunt Mary, Yvonne, and Yvonne's kids: David, Gracie, and Ruby came to my house to visit. My parents stayed with us that night, as did Jeff's 3 oldest kids. Jeff and Marci had Ari and Arthur sleep in their hotel room with the two of them. Friday morning we all met in Provo for the 4th of July parade and festivities.
I had a tough time holding spots for my entire family, and I unintentionally made a few people see fireworks in their own minds due to rising frustration levels. The last group to give me trouble was a family of hispanic decent. Before the parade was over I asked some of the teenagers to help me carry blankets to the park so we could find an area large enough to accomodate our group.
Upon arrival we placed blankets, chairs, and bags in the area of two city placed umbrellas. There were not many people around, and there had to be a dozen umbrellas available. A couple of cousins were laying in the grass, I was reading, some were sitting in chairs, and a few were playing catch with a football. My niece said, "Lyndee, they're moving our stuff!" I sat up, and said, "Hey, excuse me, that is our stuff." The man in charge replied, "Well, we're moving it." I then walked toward them saying, "Come on, I left the parade early to get a big enough place for my family."
I pointed to other available umbrellas and continued, "There are other umbrellas, and there is a lot of free space."
The same man who spoke crystal clear English just 30 seconds earlier looked straight at me and said, "We don't speak English."
Trying very hard to keep my composure, I replied,
"Well, it's the 4th of July in America, and I think everyone should speak English here today!" They quickly gathered their things and found an unoccupied umbrella on the opposite end of the park. That night Redge and I were privileged with the opportunity of hosting 16, yep that's right, SIXTEEN KIDS! Scott 18, Kara 15, Katie 15, Alyssa 15, Laura 13, Reece 13, April 13 (almost), Karlee 12, Michael 11, Jacob 10, Alyssa the 2nd 10, Seth 9, Makenzie 8, Taite 8, Ari 6, and Arthur 6. Saturday Night we had the same group sleep at our home minus Ari, Jacob, and Michael. The kids were great, and it was so fun to watch all the cousins just playing rockband and having so much fun together. Saturday we spent the entire day at my community's clubhouse, pavilion, lake, and pool. Jeff brought his lake trampoline, and it was definitely put to good use. Jeff and my parents also brought their dutch ovens and cooked for us!
Marci and my mom worked really hard right along side their husbands, cooking over the coals so we could have the famous Edwards dutch oven chicken and potatoes! It was fabulous!
It was fun to watch Taite and her girl cousins laying out and playing games on the deck of the clubhouse.
Sadly everything had to come to an end. My parents and Jeff's family had to go back to Vegas. Carl, Lisa, and their boys drove home to Modesto, CA, early Sunday morning, and his girls flew out yesterday.
Johnny and his family headed back to California with Auntie Ann.
Connie's ballerinas had to get back to their dance studios, and Scott is preparing for Utah State.
